Foundation Skateboards was founded in 1989 by Tod Swank. Tod Swank grew up as a skater in the late 70's and after a while became more and more interested in skateboarding. After a while, Swank started traveling around and taking skate pictures, then was sponsored by Gullwing trucks and Sims skateboards. The more he traveled, the more skaters, mainly from the USA and Europe, he met and made friends for life. In 1989, Swank stopped riding for Canada's Skull Skates and then contacted Steve Rocco, founder of World Industries in 1987. Rocco then worked for Sims and was very successful in street riding, that is, skateboarding on the streets. Tod Swank wanted to start riding for him, but Rocco instead suggested that he start his own company, which later became the Foundation. Tod Swank did not want to do paperwork, or other activities that involve starting a business, but only have a Foundation that would only work with skating. The foundation then consisted only of the owner Rocco and Swank. Swank therefore later decided to collect a few pieces and get a team that worked with the Foundation's products. It went on and on, in the end he lived on the money he got from Steve. The only way for Todd to get the Foundation to survive was for him to ask Steve to run the Foundation himself. Steve agreed to it, gave him some help to run the Foundation and then became the Foundation Skateboards Swanks.Sometime along the way, the Foundation then began to become popular and began selling huge amounts of skateboards. Now the Foundation is over 20 years old, and now the paperwork that the Foundation wanted to avoid from the beginning is starting to become quite large. This is due to the Foundation's expansion and the fact that it now has a larger business. The now classic models that the Foundation has are among others; Noise, Sharple, Sharple big and Strip. The foundation slogan is "By skaters, for skaters" and is owned by Tum Yeto, who is a distributor of skateboards and is also owned by Tod Swank. The Foundation sponsors these skiers, among others; Nick Merlino, Angel Ramirez, Dan Murphy, Sierra Fellers, Corey Duffel, David Reyes, Gareth Stehr, Elijah Berie and Abdias Rivera. Foundation today also sells accessories, clothes and shoes and just as their slogan says, it is to skaters and people who like skate fashion.
