The Spanish Civil War saw soldiers wearing seven-ribbon espadrilles, which led to the first Castaner workshop being privatised by the government of the time. The company continued in the same family until the 1960s when the business underwent a shift, with Isabel Castaner coming to the front of the firm. The footwear became more colourful and fashionable and started to be marketed as the stylish espadrilles we know and love today. Castaner has worked with top fashion houses and has opened stores in various cities, including Barcelona, Tokyo and Paris.
